Many years ago, Albert E. N. Gray wrote a great speech entitled “The Common Denominator of Success”. Using his many years of experience as a successful executive, Mr. Gray found answers to the questions most of us have probably asked ourselves – questions such as “How Can I avoid failure in this new career?”… “How can I manage to succeed in my new, interesting profession?”. Mr. Gray crystallised his thoughts about these common, but important doubts that we all experience at some time during our lives and he incorporated them into a speech called “The Common Denominator of Success”. The information in “The Common Denominator of Success is truly powerful.
He talks about how he was trying to supervise and direct the efforts of a large number of people who were trying to achieve success, without really knowing himself what the secret of success. He talks of the fact that, like most of us, he was brought up to believe that success is the result of hard work. Napoleon Hill, author of the phenomenal best seller, “Think and Grow Rich” says “If you are one of those that believe that hard work and honesty alone will bring riches, perish the thought! It is not true!
Albert Gray came up with what he identified as the one common denominator of success – a common denominator of success that he says was so big, so powerful, and so vitally important that instead of writing a speech about it, he just put it on the line in words of one syllable, so simple that anybody could understand them.
He said The Common Denominator of Success – the secret of success of every person who has ever been successful – lies in the fact that “THEY FORMED THE HABIT OF DOING THINGS THAT FAILURES DON’T LIKE TO DO.”
THERE IT IS – AS SIMPLE AS THAT – BECOME SUCCESSFUL BY DOING THINGS THAT FAILURES DON’T LIKE TO DO.
Gray asks the question, “Why are successful people able to do things they don’t like to do while failures are not?” Because successful people have a purpose-strong enough to make them form the habit of doing things they don’t like to do in order to accomplish the purpose they want to
accomplish.
My business partner and mentor, Bob Proctor says that basically everything he does these days with regards to business activities gets down to the one simple question “Is it on purpose.” Our purpose is of course what will drive us to do what ordinarily we don’t want to do. Our purpose must be big enough and bold enough to drive us.
In a future article I will share Bob’s article and information on “Purpose, Vision and Goals” – look out for it.
Now, back to the Common Denominator of Success, there is more to the story and speech than I have mentioned here and if you would like a copy of the “speech” (approximately 5-6 pages) then please feel free to contact me and I will provide you with the PDF of this great speech.
